Moonstone - Sri Lankan Restaurant Hove

Mrs Woody and myself set out on one of our infrequent forays to find a new restaurant to try.

Many years ago we visited Sri Lanka & loved the food so the opening of a new Sri Lankan restaurant was to us like an oasis amongst the mediocre run of the mill curry restaurants.

We did go to the restaurant on a cold night so we were looking forward to the warming tastes and the bold flavours we found in Sri Lanka only to be disappointed on all counts.

The restaurant had a minimalist decor, stripped pine floors and similar tables and brightly lit. The room itself struck cold and the owner only switched on the heating after being asked by myself.

The food itself was mediocre, bland and tasteless.

We shared all courses and had deep fried capsicum and deep fried tuna balls as a starter. Both were unremarkable.

For the mains we tried one prawn dish and one chicken dish and a couple of vegetable dishes. All dishes tasted the same. The sauces were uniform, sticky and red, the only taste note I could identify was cheap soy sauce.

We paid roughly £40.00 for our meal, including one beer and one OJ and left.

When in Sri lanka we ate excellent food with fresh tastes, hot spices, fruity flavours and bold & extravagant seasoning. This restaurant missed all these points and it was bleeding freezing!

  2. I really disagree with your post as I too have been there and had a wonderful experience. I have just come back from Sri Lanka travelling around the island and have had the great pleasure of seeing their culture. I can appreciate the difficulties of blending cuisines over seas with the expense of importing exotic fish and vegetables, which will make a big difference in the way they cook.
I thought the food was excellent and I think your review really discredits their amazing restaurant. I would strongly advise others to go and try their food as it's completely different to a boring Indian Curry.
